70's Jhonson 2 cylinder

got one of thes,older motor,,runs good but needs a water pump,,i have done MANY water pump jobs before,,but this one has me beat,,its got the old style shifter where the shift cable hooks up on the out side of the cowl,,where do i unhook the shift rod so i can drop the lower unit?thanks in advance for any help all.

well i have looked all over it for the plate with the model num and i cant find it,any ideas where it might be,,i will get dig cam a snap some shots.

should atleast be a quarter size silver disc on the block. should have numbers on it.

not knowing what engine it is, i going to say on the side of the exhaust leg is a plate, that gives access to the coupling, for the shift rod, it's a 2 piece rod with a connector in the middle, and must be put back the same.

I think it was early 80's that started putting it behind the intake screens in the lower unit.But without the model #, or maybe pics,we can only guess.

yep second place i checked after behind the carbs,,took the plate off but all i see is a solid rod,,,evn tried neutral forward and reverse to move the rod up and down,,will look again for the model num,,TY guys.

k found some nums on what looks to be the freeze out plug

35 horse evinrude, 1980.

Have you removed the bolts that hold the lower unit on yet?

I have a feeling that you will see the coupling there when you start to drop the L/U. You may need to put in forward to drop it enough to get to....

yes have removed bolts,,,it only drops about a quarter of a inch,,will try shifting gears tommorow to see if it helps.TY again all.
