I have a 1971 50HP that is giving me fits and i'm not sure what step to take next. It overheats after idling for about 2-3 minutes. The hot horn sounds and I kill the engine. I believe i'm having a waterflow problem.
I've replaced the thermostat and the waterpump assembly. When I pulled cover for the thermostat there was evidence of insects having nested in there(this motor sat for 4-5 years before I bought it) . I cleaned it all out and forced water from the waterpump feed hose up and through the thermostat hole.
After reassembling that cover and the lower unit I tried the engine again, and again it overheated after 2-3 minutes.
Frustrated, I removed the exhaust cover to inspect those water passages and it was apparent that water had made it there. I didn't see any obstructions.
Where else do I need to look? What should I do next. My SELOC is of no help for understanding the waterflow path on this powerhead. Where might it be clogged.
The fact that this motor also lacks a tell tale is also frustrating.
