I have a 1971 50HP that is giving me fits and i'm not sure what step to take next. It overheats after idling for about 2-3 minutes. The hot horn sounds and I kill the engine. I believe i'm having a waterflow problem.

I've replaced the thermostat and the waterpump assembly. When I pulled cover for the thermostat there was evidence of insects having nested in there(this motor sat for 4-5 years before I bought it) . I cleaned it all out and forced water from the waterpump feed hose up and through the thermostat hole.

After reassembling that cover and the lower unit I tried the engine again, and again it overheated after 2-3 minutes.

Frustrated, I removed the exhaust cover to inspect those water passages and it was apparent that water had made it there. I didn't see any obstructions.

Where else do I need to look? What should I do next. My SELOC is of no help for understanding the waterflow path on this powerhead. Where might it be clogged.

The fact that this motor also lacks a tell tale is also frustrating.

Re: 71 50HP Evinrude Overheating

Okay, so I pulled the cylinder head today. Broke 2 bolts in the process  -- found some corrosion in the water passages there but nothing that would totally block water flowing through the system.

Where does the water join the exhaust in this motor? Does anyone know the general water flow path for this era motor. Any help is appreciated.
