My $56 ebay motor runs awesome except at idle or when low speed jets are main circuit. Rebuilt carbs. Set low timing at 3 deg and max at 19 as per manual. 3 deg low also has cam at mark, as per supplement for manual. mix set in gear @idle warmed up. Seems as though it loads up at idle yet it needs a shot of choke and some throttle to start. mostly seems a problem at a busy boat launch when starting it to load on trailer, other than that it wouldn't bother me at all. No tach on it yet (coming) and hate a high idle rounding off dogs on gears. I have noticed that the bores for the throttle shafts seem sloppy but not sure what norm is for these carbs. How much slop is there in the throttle shafts through the bore on these carbs? My 40 and 18 'rudes are tighter(but also different carbs). Anyone ever try boring these out and putting bushings in?

130's for compression on both cylinders. The problem is only when it seems to be relying mainly on low speed jets, jets and passageways are clean. Only things I can thing of are slop in throttle shafts letting small amount of air bypass venturi, reeds , or the plastic bearings ( possible to have damaged or distorted when I installed new ones....real tight fitting).

did you remove the plug on top of the carb and clean out the low speed jets, having to choke tells me it is not getting enough fuel to stay running. yes you could be sucking air. but i doubt thats the problem. i use a small dowel to tap the new plug back in. also use a punch (ice pick) to remove the old plug. i have the same motor.

when i rebuilt the carbs on mine i also noticed the excessive play in the butterfly shafts, i accually removed one to see if there was an o-ring or something, but found nothing. I'am also fighting with a rough idle and when its running somewhat smooth the rpms are so high i dont like to put it in gear.
we most likely have the same problem, I will let you know if i find out whats wrong.

I will definitely be following this thread. good luck
