Ok this thing has been running like a champ until last weekend. I have to "feather" the choke continuously to keep it running. Will run for about 30 seconds at full choke, push the choke in motor sounds great for 10 seconds then dies, if I pull the choke before it dies it returns to somewhat idle, and back and forth, back and forth...seems like it is pulling air in somewhere maybe..fuel hoses are old but no apparent breaks or holes....any ideas where to start?

BassBoss,

Your carburetor is fouled-classic symptoms.

Get a carb kit (available here on iboats) and rebuild the carb. Pay special attention to the carb float level.

It is not getting enough fuel. You may have slurped up some gunk from bad gas or something. I would check to make sure all my hoses and connections had no leaks. Is your vent open on your gas cap? How's the fuel pump? You might also check your slow idle jet or fast idle jet. It could be that they're out of adjustment because your packing nut backed off. If checking all that doesn't fix it, you may have to rebuild your carb because something's likely stopped up. Just an idea.
Hope this was helpful,

Check the high speed orfice plug. It's in the very bottom of the carburetor, deep in the hole behind the hex headed plug. It has something partially restricting it. Hunk of dirt or something.

Definitely a fuel restriction somewhere... look around and tear the carb apart if you have to.

Re: 71 6hp evinrude fisherman too much air?

You guys kick *****. Bought carb rebuild kit complete with new float and float valve assembly. "Adjusting" the float level was a little tricky but I finished the whole thing in one late evening. Took her out for a spin on the river as the lakes are frozen. She purrs like a kitten. The high speed oraface was clogged and most of what came out of the carb while cleaning it had a red tint (rust?). So I spent $17.99 on a new fangled plastic fuel tank :D and all is well. Now all I need is some warmer weather to get these fish biting. Thanks again all!
