so i bought a boat with this engine the gears in the lower unit were tore up from the wires being pinched by the drive shaft. from their they were routed up the right side water pipe which i believe is suposed to suck water out from around the engine. i shined a light up the hole and couldn't find any other passage. their is no hole for a mechanical shift the wire on my new lower unit comes between the two water pipes and looks like it should be there. any help would be great I'm stumped

I am assuming you have a 40hp? So what is the question? Yes, the 40hp wires come up between the water tubes, if that is what you want to know. I don't know how it would be possible for them to get tangled with the drive shaft because the drive shaft runs in a tube. FYI, the second water tube is a return to the water pump (it is a thermostat-controlled recirculating cooling system). But that is another topic.

What is the question?

sorry my question is where is the hole supposed to be for the wires to come up to the engine area. the left tube goes to the engine the right one is just open mid right side of engine. it is a 1971 85 hp. the last lower unit had the wires coming up that right tube but I'm pretty sure that was wrong. i had shined a light up the hole where the water tubes go up hoping to find another hole to pass the wires through but couldn't find one

OK, answer to the question is the wires come up through a hole in the powerhead adapter, starboard (right) side of the powerhead, near the cylinder head. They do NOT pass through any sort of a tube. The annular rings around the cable seal it to the hole in the adapter. The usual procedure is to tie a string or something to the wires before removing the lower unit, and use the string to pull them back up when reinstalling. Since it is too late for that now, you will have to get something like a piece of wire down through there to fish them back up.

Now, about that water tube. BOTH tubes are supposed to enter the water pump. Somebody screwed yours up. It probably won't cool that way. You are going to have to put it back like it is supposed to be.
