Well in a previous thread, I went over my over heating issue, I got a new impeller and checked my old one and it was for sure bade. I replaced it. And went to pull my thermostat out but it was already removed. I took most the copper water lines out and all of which were clear of debris. Hooked her up the hose water was cool. Fired her up and watched the the temp gauge slowly rise. It had extremely good water flow so I was freakin out. Shut it off. and said maybe its the gauge? Or sending unit? Grabbed a new auto meter gauge from my shelves and made my own fitting adapter because nobodu stocked the right one. lol. Hooked it up and fired it up again, It got up to 210 and stayed there pretty consistent at idle and revving every so often. So we then timed it and it seemed to be running great. Only to find out the alternator doesnt work. So I think Im gonna throw a GM one wire alt in there. Maybe build a bracket if I need to. They seem similar in size. So I think tomorrow Im going to attempt that. Think it will work? When in doubt fabricate (Mini trucker at heart) ANYWAY, took it out today and it was fun but without an alt. We couldnt go fast. Also I need my carbs tuned and sync'd But it fired up and was fun. My bilge pump works too :) I think Im gonna change out all my gauges to these autometers, They look great and IMO more reliable! One of my seats will be re done by next week so Thats exciting too!

be sure to install a MARINE alternator, otherwise you run the risk of going out on the boat and never coming back, i.e. BOOOM!!!

Thanks for the input. I didnt know there was a difference between auto and marine alternators. Ill for sure make certain to ensure its a marine alt.

Anyone know if anything will stop working if I switch to a marine one wire alt? No point in messing with this old alternator, If I can upgrade to a better alt thats hassle free. also. Im thinking of putting a second battery on the boat for the stereo. It will be amplified and will be on the entire time on the boat. I figured it would be smarter to keep the batteries seperate. So the motor can always have enough juice to crank :)

its usually cheaper to have the one you have now, rebuilt.

210 is way to hot. Put a proper thermostat in it. I believe you have an oil cooler on that engine, have you tried backflushing that? Was the old impeller missing the tips off the flaps?

How hot should it run? Automotive engines typically run at between 190-230 degrees. Im very new to marine so please help me out :) The originial alt. is externally regulated, So F that. I want a simple system with one wire and one thats new and reliable lol. Thanks for the input though. The old impeller was just that...old. It had cracks in it and all the fin/blades were bent stiff into the position they were in. It flows water fantastically now. Driving at idle for a good 10-15 minutes and it still stayed at 190-205 never has gotten past 210.

Re: 71 Glastron issues!! Help!

Well, Hmm. I just checked out a new thermostat kit, They run around 80 bucks. Ill pick up up mid next week. Its specific to my 130 motor, and its a 180* thermostat. The marine tech said it should run between 160-180 all the time. He also said that my oil cooler might be clogged as did you. Im going to pull the oil cooler off tomorrow and see if there is any debris in it clogging it up. My head gasket is still good and my oil isnt milky.. Also. Ordering a new 1 wire Marine alt. Found one for 80 bucks shipped. So hopefully all this stuff can be taken care of soon..

The motor is a volva 4cyl B20 (AQ130C) Dual carbs. With a Volvo Penta 270 Outdrive. Thanks for the help!

BTW my AQ130C runs a little on the hot side when it is hooked to the hose, I don't think you will get a proper reading until you have it in the water.
