Hi there, first post on forum so hope it makes sense! I purchased a 71 Starcraft SS with a 71 Johnson 60 hp ESL "C" motor on it from Minnesota this past June. Anyways this is my first boat and I'm detrmined to do all work on this baby myself!
I have been having intermitent spark issues, when turning key to on position I hear a humming/ buzzing sound from motor (seems like comimg from Amp) and then it fires up. But every now and then (when about to launch boat it seems) I lose that humming/ buzzing sound and it won't fire and has no spark! The other day I noticed the starter bendix was not disengaging from flywheel, so a shot of wd 40 solved the problem. I then put in a fully charged battery and have had no problems the last 4 days.
When turning key to on position just prior to turning engine over (engine cover off can hear best) should I hear that humming/ buzzing sound from the motor?
I took red wire from Amp off the power panel and when turned key to on position no hum/buzz and when put back on got the sound back.
I'm wondering if I'm even supposed to be hearing the hum/buzz sound and if I have a bad Amp!
Thanks, any help on this would be appreciated.
