I am new here and hoping you all can help.....

I have a 1971 9.5 horse johnson. It was my grand fathers. It has never seen a winter outside. Most of it's years it was run a couple of times. It is a first pull starter almost every time. Last fall it started "slipping" under load. much like a car with a transmission that is going out. the engine would rev and it would loose thrust. I called my local repair shop and they told me they no longer work on anything older than 1980! what is going on with the motor? Is it something I can repair? This motor not only has sentimental value. It hauls me to the duck blind in the fall! thanks in advance for any help!! M

More than likely the problem is that the propellor has spun. That means that the rubber between the inner and outer hubs of the propeller has lost its grip. You may also have had a broken drive pin (sometimes called a shear pin).

If you have a spare prop, give it a try.

The good new is that you most likely only have a spun propeller hub . The rubber bushing in the prop (yes there is one in there). You can check by taking the prop off, and drawing with permanent marker a straight line across the back of the prop, across both the inner and outer hubs. Then run the motor in the water. Betcha the lines don't line up anymore. If the prop is indeed spun, you can get it repaired or get a new prop.

Try removing the prop and put a mark on both the inner and outer part of the prop. Run the motor on the water...then remove and see if the two marks moved relative to one another. If they did, you have a spun prop.
