I have aquired a 71 electramatic 40. Since this is my first elictric shift motor, what things need to be checked in the lower unit to ensure that I dont have problems with the shifting mechanisims?

Just make sure it doesn't leak. They don't like water in there. Also you have to use OMC/BRP Premium Blend gearcase oil. Get it from a Evinrude/Johnson dealer. They also have it here at iboats, called Type C. DON'T use Hi-Vis oil!

The electric shift is a good system, in spite of a lot of contrary opinions. The biggest problem is electrical---wiring and shift switches. The lower unit is expensive to rebuild if ever needed, but so are the mechanical ones. And the mechanical ones need it more often.
