71 sportwin 9.5 shifting problem

i changed the impeller and when i put it all back together the shift lever is not in the correct place.and also it sometimes skips neutral and i need to force it to have forward gear. thought i put it back correctly but im not sure what went wrong.

Did you have the screw for the shift rod connector all the way out so that it could grab the recessed part of the rod?

yes i did but i when i tightened the screw it slipped out a little bit maybe thats the problem

just to let you know it was the shifter rod that was not all the way in.thanks for the tip it shifting fine now.
