With no electrical power to the green and blue leads going to the lower unit the prop is in forward gear.As soon as I get my socket-plug problem fixed on the harness, will check the motor in the barrel of water.I presume that the motor must be running to shift into neutral, reverse?Does it shift to forward when shut off,and then back to neutral before it can be started?[neutral must be selected before starter will crank motor]This motor is new to me and I don't have a manual for it.Where is a good place to get one?

Hi Dave.....

The lower unit will be in gear until the engine is started. Reason being that if the shift solenoids go out while yer on the water, you can at least get home.

Power to lower unit;

Forward gear....12 volts on both blue and green wires.

Neutral...12 volts on blue wire, no volts on green.

Reverse...No volts on blue wire, 12 volts on green.

Blue wire is reverse, green is forward.

Think I got it right. :D

Dave.... If you've mentioned the horsepower of that 1971 Evinrude, I've overlooked it. However it sounds like you're speaking of a "Hydro Electric" shift unit, not a "Selectric" shift unit. In which case the following will be of interest to you.

(Hydro Electric Shift)

The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Preminum Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).

With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

Re: '71Evinrure Selectric-shifting

Thanks guys! I'll have some one work the controlls while I watch to see if it is working OK.Oh,it is a 65hp. I called it a Selectric because thats what is on the trim plate of the control unit that came with the boat& motor.Type "C" lube for lower end,I'll get some and change it.Where is a good source for a manual?

Dave..... OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) did not manufacturer a 65hp in 1971. What is the model number of that engine so that we know what we're talking about.

Re: '71Evinrure Selectric-shifting

Dave..... Your engine (65273) is a 1972 65hp Evinrude which does have the "Hydro Electric" shifting system.
