I have been working on this good old engine, primarily on the ignition system. After disassembly, cleaning, setting gaps, etc., I am now in the final reassembly phase. I am concerned I may have accidentally misconnected the spark leads from the distributor to the cylinders. I could not find a listing in the service manual showing which ports fire which cylinder. Below is a rough sketch of how they are currently connected, and I would like to know if that is correct, or how to determine what it should be.

Thanks!

to bow

cyl 2 cyl 3

cyl 1 cyl 4

Ign. coil

I am numbering the cylinders as follows:

upr port 2 upr strbrd 1
lwr port 4 lwr strbrd 3

Hopefully, this makes sense. I am not much of an artist, especially on the computer

If you're asking how the cylinders are numbered.........

Standing in back of the engine and facing the spark plugs, the cylinders are numbered as follows:

Port...2.....1...Starboard

Port...4.....3...Starboard

You don't even have to remember that. Just start at the top. That is #1. Next one down is #2, then #3, then #4 at the lowest. True of almost every two-stroke outboard

Joe has a good explanation.

I am not asking how the cylinders are numbered, but rather the leads from the distributor. The cylinder numbers were provided in case they were incorrect (but I do not think they were). On the schematic of the distributor, unfortunately the spacing and arrangement got changed in the posting. Imagine a (analog) clock face with 12 at the top and 6 at the bottom. There are 5 terminals for the leads. 2 on the right (say 2 and 4), one at 6 for the ignition coil, and two on the left (say 8 and 10) The leads from which terminal (2,4,8,10) go to which cylinder?

Thanks for your replies!

The plug wire screw in terminals of the Bakelite distributor cap are clearly marked 1, 2, 3, 4, so #1 wire would screw into the #1 screw in terminal of the distributor cap, etc.

I have a Johnson 100, and with the stator on, you can't read the numbers. With the coil tower facing the rear or roughly the rear, they are numbered consecutively clockwise with number 1 being the first after the coil tower. So 1 is port rear, 2 is port front, 3 is starboard front and 4 is starboard rear. Firing order is 1,2,3,4. Joe explained the physical layout of the cylinders. Hope this helps.

Thanks for both replies! I did not see any numbers on the cap, but maybe I was not looking close enough. I will disassemble and examine more closely. In the meantime, based on the Johnson 100 comment, they do look like the correct placement.

Thanks again for your responses.
