Recently purchased a 1972- 70 hp, someones unsuccesfull project. Cleaned carbs, changed CDI, Set points to .014 and it fired up . Took it out and no acceleration with the throttle, took the hood off and accelerated by moving linkage and the motor screamed full throttle back to the dock. Adjusted the timing a little each way with no results, Thinking timing belt has been tampered with, but old flywheel has tdc mark, but no distributor to flywheel mark. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What linkage did you manually move to make the motor "scream"? If you moved the throttle linkage and it ran good then it's not a timing issue.

Pull the hood(cowling) off and have someone work the controls. Watch to see if the throttle linkage is working properly at the engine.

Your cables could be frozen, broken, or stretched out.

Watched the carb and timing tutorial thread, pretty much showed everything needed to synchronise distributor to flywheel and set carbs and timing, and on identical motor. Back on the water for fathers day, thanks to all at I-Boats.com
