I have a 72 evenrude 65hp with the selectric push button gear selection. My problem is the motor seems to be stuck in gear but when I go to start it I can turn the key and it hardly has enough balls to turn the motor over . Now when I pull the spark plugs and crank it spins over like nothing but as soon as compression is added the starter struggles to spin the motor over . Is my starter done or is there anything I can do to test before I spend more money lol .

Have the battery load tested. Try jumping the starter directly from your car or truck -- positive clamp to the post on the starter side, negative to the mounting base. If the starter cranks the motor easily, the problem is elsewhere.

When the motor is NOT RUNNING it will be in forward gear.-------Once the flywheel makes just 1 turn it develops oil pressure in the gearcase to shift into neutral.----Take starter apart for inspection.----Load test battery ----Inspect battery cables and connections.

1st thing first. Battery is first. 2nd things second. Battery cables and connections are second. Don't just look at them, take them apart and clean them shiny bright and reassemble tight. 3rd things third. Now you can look at the starter. No, I take that back. Break out that multimeter and do some voltage drop tests. If you don't know how to do that, learn. Or get somebody that does. It might lead to the starter, but test stuff first.
