I recently took the starter motor off my 1972 100 hp Evinrude. It seemed like it was turning the motor over slowly, so I thought I would check brushes, etc. There was grease in the end cap that was quite solid. so I basically just cleaned every thing and put it back together. The starter motor spins nicely now, however, the gear that turns the flywheel no longer rises to the occasion. Any suggestion on how to troubleshoot repair this would be appreciated.

I think the gremlin law is at work here, as I did nothing with this part of the starter. I just cleaned the interior bushings, armature, etc. of the field frame, and did not touch (except in handling) any part of the shaft and starting gear.

Please excuse if I am not using the correct part names, as I am not a mechanic by training.

Can you turn it by hand the little gear (bendix drive gear),If not oil it and work it till it spins by hand turning it.while you turn it it should go up, centrifical force sends it up with the starter,If the starter is not sending it up after its free and lightweight oil applied the starter most likely needs rebuild. The reason you took it off (turned the motor slowly) leads me to believe it is free and the starter needs looking into.

Did you have your battery load tested and are the battery connections on both the battery and the mtr good, clean and tight??

Is the motor running in the correct direction? Did you mark the end plates and housing to make sure it was assembled the same as it was?

Re: 72 evinrude starter assistance

The drive gear slides easily up the shaft by hand. I just have to hold the center shaft, otherwise, both spin together. However, the drive gear just does not spin up (via centrifical force) when the motor spins. Should I try to remove the drive gear, and if so, how? I can not find any sort of nut or flat spot to hold the center shaft while trying to spin the nut off.

Yes to both questions. The starter motor turns what appears to be just fine, but the drive gear does not come up and engage the flywheel. However, the drive gear does spin with the center shaft.

By motor running, I assume you are talking about the starter motor (I just wish the actual outboard was running). Anyway, when looking down at the drive gear, it is spinning in a counter clockwise direction, which is opposite the direction the flywheel turns (at least with the useless starter rope).

If there are marks on the end caps and the frame make sure they are lined up correctly; that starter motor will run backwards from what it should. I learned that the hard way. Sounds like you are 180 degrees out.
