I have an '72 Johnson 125hp that Idles fine, but as soon as I give it some gas (pull the lever) the engine shuts down. This is a recent problem.. It wasn't doing it the first day I took it out, it started doing it the second day as the day went on, by the end of the day, it wouldn't go anymore....

Magic,

Have you checked your carb floats. It sounds like they may have gone bad. If you have not, it may be a good idea to get a carb rebuild kit and pull them off on a good workbench. I rebuilt my entire 1972 125 and it is spotless. A ring had failed and basically burned a hole through piston #3. Don't give up on the Johnson 125 as there are too few of them out there. 50th Anniversary Big Johnson. The kits are not expensive so they are definately worth it. Hope this helps. May I ask what boat you run it on? I have a 72 Glastron V-Hull V-163.

Previously - LostBoater 72

Re: '72 John 125hp Chokes out problem

I had a 1970 60Hp that kept giving me choke grief. It had a manual choke knob on the motor that I just plain removed. I mean it's not like you're actually going to be able to start it with a rope anyhow. I always wondered why they put a manual choke on the big motors. Anyhow it had three positions, Off-Auto-On. If it was either Off or On, it basically disabled all choke control at the choke switch.

There was also an automatic feature that half-choked the motor when it was cold. I disabled that too. It flooded the motor when it was just a bit cooled-off, but too warm to need choking. If I recall correctly, the automatic circuit wire was purple with a yellow stripe and the electric choke switch wire was purple with a white stripe. I moved the p/y wire to the p/w terminal on the strip and it solved all of my choking problems. I don't know if yours has these, but if it does, give it a try. That'll put you in complete control of the choke at the choke switch.
