Experts... My 72 Johnson 100HP pops out of gear randomly, and won't re-engage, or even attampt to. It gets worse the longer the motor runs. I took the lower end apart, and everything "looks" fine. I thought it could be the shift solenoid, but isn't the default position "engaged"? Please help!!

..not an expert, but maybe you're getting 12v to the solenoid accidently. The shift dogs looked OK?

Markdclay.... Yes, the default is for the unit to be engaged in forward gear (no voltage to either solenoid).

That unit demands "Premium Blend" gear lube, also known as "Type C". Anything other than this will cause erratic problems, possibly what you're encountering.

Other than that, for the unit to disengage forward gear to neutral and stay in neutral, I would also have to assume that somehow 12 volts is accidently being applied to the green (neutral) shift wire.

After you shut the engine down, does the unit then go back into forward? If so, temporarily disconnect the green and blue wires leading to the lower unit, then water test it.

If the problem still exists, I'd suspect the gearlube. If the problem no longer exists, then I'd lean towards an electrical short that's applying voltage to the green wire.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks Gent's... I'll give it a try. I already have Type C oil in the lower end, and will check the green wire for 12V.
