I have a 72' 65hp merc at home. I am not very mechanically inclined, however the motor runs ok and I would like to do some work to it. Is there anything that any of you think should be replaced on a motor ever so many years, however is a some what simple to moderate mechanical job.....remember I am not that mechanically inclined.

Also, is chaning the water pump and impella on a motor of this year a tough job? Any special tools or things I should look out for on a motor of this age.

Jacob, The thing to watch for on those motors is overheating and lean fuel mixure. Changing the impeller should solve the first issue. Keeping the carbs clean will solve the second issue.

The impeller change is not difficult, but you will need a manual to assist you. Cleaning up the carbs is a PITA, but not really hard. Any chance thay are clean now? As a minimum, I would remove the brass hex bolt in the base of the carb and give the main jet a blast of carb cleaner. Of course if you see sludge or it wont run correctly, you will need to remove and soak 'em.
