it seems that i have heard of an interchange but i have looked everywhere and cant find anything, i cant even find all the tune-up parts i need for the old set up, iguess its too old, i can only find points no condensors. i would like to put on like a cdi or something.

can any one tell me if they make this interchange? if so where do i find one?

Re: '72 merc 9.8

Your 72 Merc has a fully-contained CDI ignition under the flywheel. You likely will not need to replace the giant capacitor and anyway, it's NLA and not likely to be bad.

The Phase Maker points "make" to spark this ign and operate at very high voltages. They will look really nasty and burnt. All you have to do is take them out, clean up to bare metal, degrease, reinstall and gap to .020". They'll work just fine.

However, you can new set points in there if it makes you feel better!

You'll notice a white plastic insulator where the points and external wiring connect. These insulators will deteriorate/crack then they leak voltage to ground which kills the spark. I was looking up parts recently and it appears they have been discontinued by Merc.

Places like Oldmercs.com (as previously suggested) or Seaway Marine http://www.sea-way.com/ in Seattle may have old stock of these, I'd recommend replacing them unless they look brand new. It'll save you a lot of grief down the line.

The other troublesome area for these motors is cracked coils. They'll crack and arc to ground. Many times so badly you can hear the 'snap snap' of the spark as the engine's running.

You can remove the coil, pull back the rubber insulating cover and visually inspect all over for cracks or arc marcs. Replace if you see any.
