got me a 72 trisonic, 165 mercruiser, I dirve. i've been haveing trouble gettin into reverse. idle speed is low, 600-700 on dash tach. gear grind is bad going into reverse. generaly not a problem gettin back to N. Forward is ok too. anyways, reverse has been getting worse to the point that didn't use it last time out. bummer docking too. so i'm thinking that i need to do some adj to the shift cable assy. have disconnected the lower shift cable out to the outdive and confirmed that i am gettin F,N,R. put it back and adj. to 5 7/8". installed cable, and adj post in slot for F,N,R. ok so i'm ready to try that, but now for my real question. this boat has sat for about 2 years. it seems to run good and the shifter problem is pre-existing and getting worse, but the girlfriend was beatin it around the lake this weekend, 4300-4400. 10 min., 15 min. WOT. we idled back down and turned it off and floated about a bit. started back up. ran poorly, put in F, accelerate and it dies, repeatedly. no chance of R, gear grind. plus if i got R, choked and died. ended up idlein back to the harbor. seemed a bit rough (vibration wise) prior to malfunctioning. and while idleing in too. now in under the shade tree it acts fine, revs up and so on. anyone know whats getting ready to break. also, noted a lite whine out of out drive while idleing back to harbor and went clunk clunk clunk and died once too, like i'd hit a rock but didn't. always started right back up, just couldn't apply any throttle at all. ?????????? sure didn't sound good. jim

Well, start with the basics.

First change all fuel filters and check/clean the carb, check plugs and wires and dist. Look at all the obvious stuff first and then test it and see what happens.

The shift cables can mess up over time and can no longer be adjusted and usually need to be replaced when they act like you described after making adjustments to specs.
