73 25 horse idle issue

I have a 73 Johnson 25 hp longshaft that i recently picked up. It was sitting for a few years. I took apart the carb and cleaned it. I start it up and it will not idle. I have to manually open it closer to WOT for it to continue to run.

The thing smokes like a SOB and occasionally spits and sputters at near WOT. I'm assuming it spits because it isn't synced with the throttle.

When I pump the primer bulb to prime, I hear a small leak. Do you think that could be why it doesn't idle? I've adjusted the low speed needle which helps but it still doesn't idle.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you,

Jeremy

Hole in fuel pump diaphragm??? Remove the pump (leave hoses connected) and squeeze the primer bulb. If gas squirts out the back of the pump, I guessed right. If gas doesn't squirt out, I guessed wrong and you can put the pump back on.

I will try that when I get home.

I hope it isn't the problem especially since the pump is 100 bucks!!!

Got it going last night. The throttle linkage was off. Venturi was closed too far to keep the motor going. I opened it up a smidge and now it just needs a bit of fine tuning.

I'm very happy:D now I can get out and do a bit of duck hunting!!!
