Hello all. I have a 1973 25hp. No spark. Doing some trouble shooting. The ignition coils on the side of the cylinders near the plugs are cracked. I looking at the parts diagrams I noticed that the 1972 and earlier don't have these coils but everything else looks the same. Magnito points condenser etc. rather than spending 70$ to replace the old ignition coils, will this engine run if I just run the high tension spark plug wires directly to the plugs and bypass the coils? What advantage are the coils over the older non cool system. Thanks.

The 'non-coil system' actually has the coils under the flywheel. And yes, you do need 'em. You still have points/condensers under flywheel. Depending on how cracked they are, you could try wrapping w/electrical tape to insulate 'em and check spark then. You may also need to clean/reset points. Some stuff you can try before shelling out the $$.

Good luck!

You have the Lo-Tension magneto. The earlier one is the Universal Magneto. Totally different animals. Even the flywheel is different. Now if you are asking if it can be retrofitted, possibly if you change enough stuff. Cheaper to buy the right coils.
