typically the stator is under the flywheel. You can see the coils and windings.(not sure on yours.Give us a model number) If it's electric start it won't run without a battery. Put a meter on your battery with the motor running and check your voltage.
If it's 13-14 volts, it has a alternator.

Hi Larry2

You have generator, if you have electric start. If the motor didnt originally have electric start ( later added ) it might be a "generator model" and mayby have a decal telling so, on top of the hood. It then needs adding of a rectifier to charge a battery. I would recommend you to get a new rectifier anyway, as they usually go bad when motor is run without connection to a battery.

You can get a rectifier at :http://www.theshadconnection.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?page=288 I think it is an AR103.
