it could be a number of things that caused the cable to snap. shifting at high idle, old worn out cable, sharp bends in the cable.

Is it hard to shift by hand?

Re: 73' 40hp evinrude, shift linkage adjustment

well whats happening is the shift cable isn't pulling the shifting mechanism all the way ahead...if I adjust the cable it will either go all the way into reverse and not forward or vise versa...there's is no in between....so I'd assume the linkage is worn out and I was wondering if there is any adjustment I can do on the motor

cable itself didnt snap, just striped the cable stop in the OMC controls..I purchased a new one today, thats when I realized that the cable can't pull the motor mechanism enough...

okay, that eliminates a lot. There should be a screw on the shift lever, left from where the cable connects. This screw connects the shift lever and safety switch lever to the shift mechanism. Loosen this screw and you can adjust the position of the shift lever. Tighten back up when you find the optimal position

There is a screw on the shift lever that syncs with the shift rod bracket and safety switch lever. I can see the screw, and it looks a little corroded. If you can't locate it on your own, you shouldn't own a boat

Seriously?

Why would I sell the boat if I cant find a bolt on the motor???hah u can be smart mouthed and I can be too...dont be an a hole bud, just asking a question..

So that neutral safety connects to the transmission...learn something new everyday

No its not hard to find however I was looking under the motor where the shifter goes and not under the hood.

thanks again, ill post if it works, I'm just scared its withing the transmission is where the problem will be

so I frig around with it today and it will go into reverse however its needs like 1/16 of an inch to go straight into forward. Is there any other adjustment that can be done?

All it needs is a touch by hand and you hear the click.

Re: 73' 40hp evinrude, shift linkage adjustment

Maybe internally the gears are worn causing the shifter to have to go so far a head to shift forward...

It seems that when it goes into reverse the shifter doesn't go far enough back and then when it goes into forward it goes to far a head. ...
