Are the '73 Johnson 50HP motors good motors?

I found one for $100, but the owner said one cylinder was "bad". He said it started running rough one day and when they got it back to the dock there was some "shavings" on the bottom plug. My brother seems to think it's probably just a ring that stuck and that it's probably worth buying and taking a closer look. I looked at it the other day and it turns over fine and looks in overall pretty good shape.

Are the parts readily available for this old of a motor? That is my biggest concern.

You have to ask yourself how much time and money are you willing to put into that motor. I believe the parts are available without too much looking. but the question is what caused the cylinder to fail in the first place? and will it happen again? Shavings in a cylinder are never good. you will have to get the head off and check the cylinder to see if any damage has been done to the cylinder wall by these "shavings".
