Help troubleshooting 1973 9.5 Johnson

Just bought a 1973 9.5 hp Johnson, did a test drive, primed it, noticed fuel coming out the back of carb, emptied fuel, started motor (with cover off) took it about 1 miles running good with a little bit of a weak sputter sound every 20-30 secs, next day take it on the water, I mixed 93 octane with marine 2 cycle, and some sea foam, engine hard to start, then got started ran good for about 2 minutes, then bogged down and ran bogged down for about 5 minutes, after shutting off carb had to be drained once again. After this engine will run strong for about 8-10 seconds before bogging down and dying, each time carb must be drained in order to restart engine.

Some trouble shooting needs to be done.----Nobody here can see or hear your engine.-----So---Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or more , yes or no ?-----Does primer bulb on hose go hard, yes or no ?-----Have you replaced water pump impeller ?-----Changed gear oil in the bottom end ?

Primer bulb goes hard, have not replaced water pump impeller, have not changed gear oil, and have not checked spark.
I will check spark, change gear oil, and try to determine if water pump impeller needs to be replaced.

Water pump impeller should be replaced.------Simply because your motor does NOT have an overheat shutdown system.-----On failure of the impeller the motor would run till it came to a dynamic halt !!

Okay I’m a big newbie, could you tell me how I would go about checking if the spark gap is 1/4” or more, and how I would diagnose if I need to change out the water impeller

These era motors were famous for cracked coils.-------The plastic cracked with age.-----The last 7 motors I picked up with that magneto had 5 of 14 coils cracked.----Other coils had been replaced already !-----You glue 2 pieces of wire ( any type wire ) on carboard with 1/4" space between.---Remove sparkplugs for easy cranking. --Stick one were end in sparkplug boot.---Other end clipped to the block.----Pull cord .---See if there is spark at the gap that goes ---" snap , snap , snap ".

if you do not know the physical status of your coils…... you have not puled the flywheel which is a necessity 50 years after.

a good jumping spark is a god start but cracked coils may overheat down river….

Leroy's has a good article on the 9.5hp ..

you have lots of utubes to help out on the 9.hp servicing ( ex: servicing the carb which must be spotless…)

Okay guys I found the issue, carb float is so Gunked up it will not move by gravity, also found that the two plug holes are jb welded shut opposed to putting proper plugs that come in rebuild kit (currently rebuilding) any ideas on how to remove the jb weld? I have a hole through the smaller hole of the jb weld, however the bigger hole the jb weld made its way down into the hole before sealing, I do not want to drill and damage carb. Maybe try sanding it out?

Here are the images of the jb weld filled holes and also the float pin I’m having issues with, I Started to use a Stengel to drill a hole and then work off but I do not know how deep these holes are (not wanting to damage carb).

Hey guys recently picked up this 73 9.5 sea horse and was having fuel/carb issues, so I tore the carb apart after purchasing a rebuild kit. What I found was the two core plugs had been filled in with what looks like jb weld, I also found the float gummed up and hard to move. What I am asking is solutions of how to remove the jb weld, and how to remove the float pin. I added some links of what I’m dealing with to paint a better picture.

I started using a dremel to try and drill a hole in the jb weld, I succeeded on the small hole, however I stopped on the larger plug because unlike the smaller hole it was not flush with the carb body it is sitting down about 1/4” into the core plug hole.
