73 9.5 SportTwin Flywheel repair or replacement

After last weekends trouble of getting the 9.5 running I took to it again this weekend. The key holding the flywheel in place sheared off and the flywheel spun. Luckly a local marine had some parts of the same motor lying arounf and I was able to get another key. The problem is that the flywheel looks to be broken where the key fits. It is being pushed out a bit and the slot the the key fits into looks widened at the botton of the flywheel.

Is the flywheel repairable? BTW I tried it with the new key and I still couldn't get it to fire.

New coils, plugs, points, condenser and it ran great last year.

Go to the "Top Secret File" and look for a salvage yard near you, you need another flywheel. Make sure you torque the flywheel to proper specs.

Dang, I was hoping not to have to do that. The only junker I can locate in Canada is in Havelock and thats where I got the key. He had sold the flywheel a couple of weeks earlier on his only 9.5 Sportwin.

Laurentian Marine here in Ottawa has a bunch of breaker motors when I was last in, may help if you call them for a flywheel. Another place I get parts from may have one, have you done your year research as in what years fit what motors?

Update: A quick look on Evinrudes site shows that any flywheel off a 9.5 from 68-73 is the same part number.

Have you checked the replacement key since you tried starting a second time? Very good chance you've sheared that one too. Once the key groove in the flywheel was damaged, its ability to hold even with the proper amount of torque on the flywheel nut is severely compromised. Saving grace is that you have a small engine which generates much less inertia so the metal just might hold. I sheared mine 3 straight times on a V-4 before I realized my idiocy.

I have one I'll give you for free (if you get it COD...!) I'm in Nova Scotia. I would like to ask a favour in return...? I have the same motor and can't get the throttle linkage back together again. If you could send me as may pictures of the linkage as you can and maybe a picture or two of the throttle armature at the carb, I'll put it on a plane for you tonight!!!

Any idea what the cost would be to ship it to Ontario? I suspect it would be more then getting one bought and shipped from within Ontario.
I could be totally wrong though

What is sometimes forgotten is the flywheel key is nothing but a guide to properly locate the flywheel for proper timing position. What holds the flywheel in position is the "morse taper" it sits on. With clean surfaces on both the flywheel and c/s taper and the PROPER torque, this is what holds the flywheel on and in proper position. If the timing is off a little due to a widened key way it can be adjusted.

Thanks boobie, good to know. The problem with this flywheel is that along with it being widened at the lower point of the key channel, it is also cracked at the thinest point in the keyway path.

Then replace it. When flywheels come off of running mtrs for some strange reason they always want to go FORWARD.

It Runs!!. Thanks Dave for the Flywheel. That and a good carb cleaning, setting of the points and new plugs have it running stong. It a 2 pull wonder now Not bad for a 37 year old motor.
