73 Evinrude 115 - Lower End Leak

I've noticed that when I run the motor with the muffs, I can see water leaking from the seams at the top of the lower unit. I drained the oil and not surprisingly, it looked like milk. So I purchased a new seal kit and am trying to educate myself as much as possible before I tear into it.

In my manual it says that when replacing the shaft seal to wipe the outer diameter of the new seal with OMC Gasket Sealing Compound and to also use this on the impeller gasket (if there is an impeller gasket).

Also when installing the new o-ring in the bottom of the impeller housing, use OMC Adhesive M.

I've watched some videos that I could find and I've read some threads on this but I haven't heard or seen anyone using gasket sealing compounds on impeller gaskets and Adhesive M on O-rings.

Also, I was expecting that I was going to get some type of gasket that would sit at the top of the lower unit to create a seal between the seams, but I guess not.

Here's my questions:
1.) What is gasket sealing compound and adhesive M? Do I really need those?
2.) Am I supposed to seal the lower unit seam somehow?

Just trying to figure it out. Thanks for your help.

Permatex gasket sealer (in a can with a brush on the lid) is fine and 3M weatherstrip adhesive may be used in place of sealer M.

The parting line between the mid section and lower unit is not sealed.

OEM shop manual will tell you where to use what sealers.

Gasket sealing compound is goopy brown stuff, looks like what my father used to call "pipe dope" only maybe not so thick.

Adhesive M has been superceded by 3M 847, it's a kind of rubbery cement. As mentioned, permatex #2 is a reasonable substitute, although the 847 is much less messy and easier to clean off there next time around.

you can get both at i shop marine dot com (just be sure to buy everything else from iboats)

Sealers aren't called for on orings and housing gaskets in later models, explains the discrepancy you noticed on the videos. Your model might do fine without 'em, but I can't speak to that with any authority.

my oem manual (1979) says to apply adhesive M to the joint between lower unit and exhaust housing, but it doesn't have to be a water tight seal and lots of guys just leave it bare.
