73, Evinrude 9.5 Locked up.

I bought a 1973 9.5 Evinrude Sportwin from a guy that said it's been in his family since the 70's. He had it in a very well known boat shop here in our area this past summer and spent $200+ on it for them to get it tuned up and running good. In August he had it on the water and it was running fine until about 30 minutes in it locked up. I asked if he had the gas/oil mix right & he said yes. I'm just wondering if this is a common thing or not with this motor? And maybe some of you all could help me on which way to go next with this. I have pulled the spark plugs and sprayed WD40 in the cyclinders with a bit of motor oil too.

Well ----Maybe the issue is the gears in the lower unit.----Maybe the water pump failed.---Remove the lower unit inspect pump and see what happens.-----Or possibly something came loose under the flywheel.----Time to investigate.----Should be easy to determine the fault.

I failed to say that if I was to put a mark on the flywheel that it will move about a 1/4 inch. I have put it in forward and reverse & turned the prop and it to will move the flywheel about a 1/4 inch.

As said above, drop the lower unit. You could have probs in that or the power head. This will tell you.

That would be one heck of a drive for me to where you are racerone,,,lol

You need to follow some of the suggested inspections.-----Or pay a shop to tell you in minutes what is wrong !

as suggested drop the LU ( see utubes) if previous owner did run it with 50/1 great hopefully you did also

could be a bad impeller caused an overheat . If the innards are ok and nothing under the FW is causing a problem
one option is to unbolt the cyl head soak the cylinders with some release agent like WD40 or plain fuel oil and alternately wack the pistons with a 1" wood peg and hammer. maybe it will release and become your favorite kicker

Can you feel where the flywheel locks up? Hard metal to metal stop somewhere? Try turning clockwise by hand with the plugs out.

I was going to wait till spring to get into this project to do some of the things you all suggested here. We are havng some spring time weather today getting up to 64 degree so I figured I would go out to the garage and pull the cylinder head. I found needle bearings in the top cylinder on top of the piston. Cylinder was scored which I believe is unrepairable. So I got a parts motor I paid $50 for. I was hoping it was going to be a easy fix but will be using parts off it for another motor I have. Thanks so much for all the Great info my friends.
