Hi Guys,

I recently tore the lower unit apart to replace all seals due to water in the lower unit oil, I inspected the gears and there was no damage luckily, I reassembled everything exactly how it came out and according to my service manual.

I replaced the bearing carrier at this time as it was corroded and damaged, I didnt take note of the play before tearing it apart and this may be normal lash for the prop shaft.

I've got about 1/16th of an inch play back and forth (not axial play), ie. Pushing in and pulling out of the propshaft, the propeller has all washers, spaces and correct nuts installed and does not move on the shaft. My only though is the bearing carrier is not inserted far enough into the casing but I am hesitant to exceed the torque spec of the bearing carrier bolts or drive it in further without being sure.

I've read a few articles that claim this is normal but given i just had the lower unit apart i want to make sure this spec is acceptable, My service manual does not contain any information relating to this :(, the LU holds pressure @15psi without issue.

Can someone please clarify this for me?

Had a chat with a marine mechanic today and confirmed that the play is completely normal and within spec.
