Hi all, I have a 74 70hp Johnson. I have done a bit of work on it with your assistance and it is running better then ever (have only had it 1 month but it didn’t run when I got it) anyway, here is my question. To start it I must pull the choke out each time. If it is running and you turn it off, wait 1 minute or more you must pull the choke to get it to fire, I pull the choke, hit the key, it fires for about 2 seconds, push the choke it and hit the key it fires right up and run great, it idles fine at troll. Could this be the fuel pump/diaphragm? Any info is greatly appreciated. HAVE A SAFE WEEKEND!!!

Your idle circuit is running too lean. Choking it richens it up but you should only have to do that on a cold start. Either you have:
1. Your idle mixture screw setting is inappropriately lean. Open 1/4 turn.
2. Gummy deposits in your carb and need to rebuild it.
3. You have an air leak some where.
4. All of the above.
