Re: Please help

hi weekender......welcome to iboats.

we need more info bud. what kind of drive/ what kind of motor. it soulds like an OMC.

ther fore boot leaks are common.
one other thing is flatness and parelellism....but that is far off.....lets see what you have first.

another thing.....after a motor re and re. it is not uncommon to find a water leak. this could be a hose. or other minor issues.

one way to find it.......is to have some one drive your boat slo...turning slowly......and stick your head in there.......and look......just be careful doing it. a flash light and mirror is also handy.

cheers

Re: Please help

the motor is a 165hp inline 6 was told that the stern is a alpha 1 gen 1 i put about 4 to 5 gallons of water in the engine compartment and had water come out from the lower part of the stern drive ande did notice that the wood on the transom is getting soft? if i have to replace the transom wood not sure how hard that would be i am close to just selling the motor and stern and trailer then junk the boat.

The transom isn't "easy" to replace, but not super hard either. It's very doable and is done here all the time.

Now your last line about being close to junking it out and selling it. Well that is an age old question that I've thought about making a copy and paste reply for. The answer from and investment standpoint is no it's not worth fixin up, because you won't ever get your $$$ back out of it, but on the other hand, if you want a boat that will last for years to come and one that you KNOW is in good shape, then yeah go ahead and restore it and enjoy the time on the water with your family and friends.

It can be a tuff decision that really only you can make. If you decide to fix her up, then we are here to help. And you will not find more experience anywhere on the net than right here at iboats. There is absolutely nothing you'll run into that hasn't been handled before here.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Re: Please help

To replace the transom I recommend using a Circular Saw set to a depth just shy of the depth of your wood and cutting a grid into the transom making SURE you are NOT cutting into the outer Fiberglass skin of the Stern of the boat. Once this grid is cut it's just a matter of using a chisel to remove the wood as best you can from the outer skin. You then use a 4 1/2" grinder with a backing pad and 36 grind sanding discs to grind the remaing wood off of the skin leaving fresh glass on the outer skin of the stern into the corners, around the sides of the hull about a foot and down on the bottom of the hull about a foot. Everything should be ground down to nice clean fresh glass.
