Buddy's motor said it sounded like he hit a log at speed, similar to what an older 18 would do w/bad clutch dog ears.. He says it doesn't do it at trolling speed, but now it's about every 10 seconds at higher speeds. I changed out the gear oil, and it looked fine. Am I correct that the clutch dog in this motor has 3 ears/side as an upgrade to the older 2/side? If the forward gear's receiving surface looks good, can the clutch dog be reversed, if the reverse side ears are good? I've never done a thru-hub exhaust gearcase disassembly, any thoughts? And am I correct in assuming clutch dog/forward gear? Could it be a shift/clutch dog fork? Thanks!!

No I don't think they do, I have the gearcase from my 83 9.9 on the bench in pieces and I think the dog is still 2 per side. You need to pull the bearing carrier out with a puller then the gears can be removed for inspection. I've got a good set if you need pics to compare.

Thanks BK, I switched his motor out to a 18hp for the rest of the open water walleye-fest, so I'm in no hurry to get to it. I'm thinking I can get my local marina to pull the bearing carrier for me, as I buy lots of parts for other repairs from 'em.. Once I get the guts out, it'll probably be apparent where the issue lies.. I'll check back w/you if more questions arise.. :)

Ps.. Do you have a puller, or perhaps you fabricated one? Just curious if making one isn't too daunting. Thanks.
