I have a 15 hp Johnson model 1se74. It says electric on the back of the motor cover if this means anything? I have two issues. It won't fully engage into reverse. I will go if I play with it a little, buy it takes some doing. I tried adjusting the linkage inside the engine cover... no help. not enough adjustment. Iread in an earlier post it may be a shift rod adjustment in the lower unit? Is this hard to do?

Also I was running the motor on the lake last night, and in forward gear going about 3/4 throttle it seems that the it shifted back into nuetral (high rpms - loss of power) Is this a spun hub, or a shift rod adjustment issue? How do I check for soun hub? I think the prop is new (it had a sticker on one of the blades)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am at my place in northern Michigan for today only (where the motor is), and while I am mechanical I am not a mechanic, so I need to decide if I am going to keep this thing, pay to have it fixed, or sell it. Thanks

Re: 74 Johnson Hub / Reverse Problem

If it wasn't making grinding noises, and if it drives at slow speed, it most likely is a spun hub or cavitation.

Re: 74 Johnson Hub / Reverse Problem

No grinding noises. Pardon my ignorance cavitation? If it is a spun hub can I check it off the boat I brought the engine home with me.

Any suggestions on the reverse problem? How can the shift rod to be sure it is adjusted properly or do you think my problem goes beyond that? Any pictures would be appreciated. Thanks.
