My 74 (correct me iff I am wrong SN#4256871) 150 HP 1500 series would not produce a spark. I took it to the dealer and they said I needed a new trigger, cap and rotor. Does this sound right? They also told me they could get parts for around $800. Is there anywhere I can get these parts myself?
Also, one other thing. This boat was given to me. The hull is in fairly good condition and everything works but the engine of course. Is it worth spending the money to fix?

thanks for any help!!!

$800.00 sounds a little steep. forward your post to marine.ron@shaw.ca

I will have a look at work for you. We sell in Canadian funds so I would imagine it will be less here.

TMD

Whether it's worth spending money on, depends on the overall engine condition, not just the problem at hand. You should do a compression test and see if it has good consistant compression.
You can do this cold, without having it running.

The compresion is 118 on all 6. The impeller is good. Other than that I think its in good condition. I do know it was rebuilt not long before it was put up for three years.
thanks for the replies.

See how TMD stacks up, but I agree that it looks high. Thats app $1,500 Aust dollars.. Lotta money..
They say that the inline 6's and 4's are good reliable motors. I have an 81 50hp with similar compression that's been looked after. I would spend money on things that wear out like trigger, coils, stator etc. As far as new pistons, re-bore, new crank or driveshaft, I would go buy another same vintage motor and do a parts swap and sell or keep the surplus. With 118 in all six, it's probably as good as a 5 year old motor thats been well used.
NB Reckon she's late 1975
http://www.marineparts.com/partspages/techhelp/images/TECH158.gif
