How do you release the rod that goes to the lower unit for changing gears so that the lower unit will come out to change the water pump?

On my '84 140hp there was a screw that connected the shift shaft to the shift lever. Hope that helps. The manual had a poor diagram, but i figured it out.

Larry, her is a reprint of a post I did earlier for the the same engine.

Look below and to the rear of the bottom carb and you will see two parrallel "arms" connected to the shift shaft. The arms are held in place by a large bolt. You will need to loosen this bolt to disengage the shift rod pin. Back the bolt out just enough to disengage the pin and be careful not to turn the shift rod after the lower unit is removed. The shift rod height is adjustable. Measure the height with the gear case in neutral and check again before installation.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help but if I had been able to figure it out using the manual I would not be here asking for help and yes I do have a manual

I have the same engine and a manual, (clymer's), and it doesn't say how to get it apart in mine either. I had to come here and ask too. They tried to cram too many different engines into one book so it is kind of worthless on alot of things. I would try to find a service manual for that particular engine, that is what I'm going to do.

Rich

Re: 74md 85 hp Johnson replacing water pump

guys,
I have the original OMC service manual for 1974 85HP V4 model 85493 and on page 6-6 it says "Disconnect shift rod connector from bellcrank by loosening bellcrank screw. Spread bellcrank halves apart and disconnect shift rod connector from bellcrank. See figure 6-7"

the illustration is pretty good. the OMC service manual is sometimes better than Clymers and Seloc's sometimes it's not. it's better to have both. hope this helps.
