'75 7.5 Merc Water Pump Problem

I have a 7.5 HP Merc, s/n 4135037, that doesn't pump warter quite right. When you start it and let it idle, it spits water out intermittently with what appears to be exhaust gases. Throttle her up and you get a steady stream.<br /><br />I've changed the pump and am wondering if I have a leak where the tube goes into the impeller housing or something of that nature to cause the exhaust looking stuff.<br /><br />Thanks for any suggestions

It's quite common for the grommets to leak, I usally reseal them with sealer 1000 whenever they are disturbed

By grommets, do you mean where the water tube is inserted top and bottom? Also, Iv'e never heard of sealer 1000. Where can I find it?
