I have been offered an 85 hp Chrysler, model number 856HA, and serial number 3058. Can anyone tell me what year it was made? I already have a 75 hp Chrysler, model number T750H9A, and serial number 1195. Looking at these two motors, I would guess that a lot of the parts are interchangeable, although I would say that the 85 is a bit older than my 75. Would it be worth my while to take the 85 and keep it for spares? Spares are basically unobtainable here in Zimbabwe, and I think this extra motor might come in handy one day. Any opinions from the experts?

Zimbo,On your chrysler outboards I found the following:

85 hp-856HA 856HA-HD = 1970-1973 model
75 hp-T750H9A 750H = 1974 model

As to how many parts will be interchangeable I will leave up to one of the Chrysler experts.

Here's a site you can review model numbers if you wish.Click on modelguide in top right corner and follow your make to list.

Zimbo, By all means keep the motor for spares.
Even if spares dont work out for your motor someone will need parts somewhere.
The Chrysler section of my manual shows same bore and stroke,(3 5/16 X 2.80) Same sparkplug,(j4j or L20V 68 up)same carb.(Tillotson wb).Based on the
year it appears both motors use magnapower ignition.System would be described as an automotive style capacitor discharge ignition
using a coil and distributor.Im not an expert but from my brief look most parts will interchange.
Good luck

Re: 75/85 hp Chryslers

Thanks to you all for your input, which confirmed my first instinct and I will be keeping the motor.I have another problem with my 75, that you might have an idea or two on. The engine works well until the boat is almost on the plane. If you then push the throttle open, she goes flat out for 15 or 20 seconds, and then dies in the water. Once you start her again, she will plough along quite happily at around half throttle, but dies as soon as you try and speed up. My first thought was fuel starvation of some sort, but a learned friend here reckons he would be more inclined to think it was electrical, and somehow linked to revs. This is a new problem, and started after driving on a really bad road, which cused minor breakages to the trailer. I mention this, because the motor worked fine before the journey, and maybe the rough trip has jolted something loose? Any ideas will be investigated, and thanks once again for your help. The only manual that is available in our local library, is for Johnson motors, and I use this to get general ideas for troubleshooting etc.
