i recently replaced my suzuki with a 2003 75 hp. two stroke merc. it is from a tracker bass boat.
i seem to have everything working except the built in alarm on the control box is silent..i am not sure if there is a wire responsible for sending the signal from the motor that is not connected?
any help is appreciated..thanks!

You use a new control box or the Suzuki?
These Merc boxes are all plug and play.
Try grounding out the overheat sensor?

How did you test the built in alarm on the control box? I have a 99 tracker Merc 75 and have never heard any alarms (she runs well), which seems pretty normal - I think.

i have a standard merc control box i bought new. it has a built in alarm and it has not made a sound..i was told it should beep when first turned on..and should give me overheat and low oil alarms etc.
i plugged in the wires i could find that were color coded the same..seems like there are no other wires to connect on the engine side.
i did add an accessory harness for a temp sensor and a tach gauge..stock ones that are basically plug and play.

i have a merc. mechanic that says when i turn on the key it should beep once..he worked for a merc. dealer for 30 years so i would hope he would be right.

i think i will try some tests tomorrow to see if it will beep if i unplug the oil level sensor..that should make it sound.
the only noise i have heard on my boat lately is the groaning noise from my g.f. when i tell a bad joke. lol.

ok.. tested the tan with blue stripe wire coming from the sender to the left of the spark plugs..i grounded out the wire from the harness and it didnt make a peep.
i do have a temp gauge i added to the tan wire and it registers temp on the gauge as well as the rpm gauge works..just no alarm.
the control box is an 881170a15 and i was told has a built in alarm..i am beginning to wonder though about that.
thanks.

Re: 75 elpto control alarm not working?

I just did the same test on my 99 75 elpto and no horn. (ground test I mean) All the wires look great and I'm starting to think it's that little red horn under the dash that is out. I used the manual at 1manual.com (the second set for 75-115 is where my 75 lives - you'll know what I mean if you look there) and ran their test, which is what you and I both did. Reading this stuff makes it seem rather difficult, but you take your time and look at everything, it doesn't seem to tough.

Is there a test I can do on the horn itself? It seems to be a rather cheaply made piece of plastic and a thin piece of metal - so I may just buy a new one. I am somewhat familiar with my VO meter, so I was wondering if there are any tests I can run on the horn itself before purchasing a new one.

mine is supposed to have a built in horn in the controller..sounds like yours has a separate one.
testing it should be as simple as putting power and ground to it to se if it works..but disconnect it from the harness first for safety.

I guess I'm not exactly sure what the controller is... Looking at the pdfs from the manual, I have little horn hooked to the ignition - I went and it was there. All the wires had the same color scheme as the manual - in this case the tan/blue one.

i am just referring to the control box for the iginition,shift,tilt...in my case a side mount unit.
i just tested mine..kind of wierd result..might have been a bad connection to the horn but it looked ok when i unplugged it.
my horn has a purple wire that is the ignition. i disconnected the tan wire with the stripe that comes from the oil tank and also the overheat sensor next to the spark plugs.
i grounded the tan wire on the horn while the ignition switch was on..the alarm sounded.
my initial test with the engine running was done by grounding out the tan wire at the engine location that i unplugged from the overheat sensor..it did not sound that time..now i have pulled everything apart and done a continuity test from the harness at the rear to the control box wire to the horn..it tested good.
in any case when i put everything back together and did the same test with the engine running it works now.
i guess this system does not have a test beep when you start it as my mechanic said..grumble grumble.

Re: 75 elpto control alarm not working?

I am thinking mine is not supposed to sound at RUN either. This 99 and the 98 (which was even cleaner than this one) of the same model that I almost bought the day before did not beep at run. Doesn't mean it isn't supposed to, but I suspect it is just fine. The owner told me it will beep at you when the oil is low, so I figured it works, but then I start reading manuals and think it is supposed to sound at RUN I start to fiddle with things. It runs fine, I think I will leave it alone.
