I need to pick some brains. I have a 75HP Manual Tilt motor with a broken reverse thrust latch. Is it possible to fix that latch? I was looking at where it connects to leg, and I can't figure out how to get the pin out that holds the latch in. This is my project for the winter, along with water pump, fuel pump diaphram and lower unit oil. Oh, also, my neighbor is a mechanic at a Mazda/Ford dealer, he gave me some 75-90 Fully synthetic gear lube that Ford puts in the rear end of their cars. He says it costs about 18 bucks a quart, is this safe to run in the lower unit? I have this stuff sitting on the shelf and I would hate to get rid of it.

Re: 75 HP Chrysler Manual Tilt

I have a 1978 75 HP that originally had power tilt trim. I removed the tilt trim because it had failed and also it would not allow the lower unit to raise clear of the water. This was important because the boat lives on a mooring.

One way to remove the stainless pins is to remove the motor from the transom, heat the aluminium bracket with a blowtorch and knock out the stainless pin.

The other way (the one that I used) was to leave the motor on the boat and to drive the pin out without heating using another pin and a four pound hammer. This took about 3 hours!

I did not fit a reverse lock and therfore have to reverse dead slow. A little annoying but OK.

It looked like I was going to have to pound it out. I was hoping to avoid that. I am a firm believer in following the path of least resistence.
