75 hp water pump issue

Hello,
I just purchased what I believe is a 1961 75 hp Super Sea Horse motor. It is model V4A 14L. When I took it out for the 1st time I noticed steam coming out of the exhaust. I did not see water coming out. I had run the motor for about 10 minutes. By the time I got it back to the launch, it was probably 15 or 20 minutes. It did not seem to overheat. There is an over temp light and it did not come on, but I do not know if that works. I believe the water pump is not working or working poorly. I would like to work on this myself. Can you give me some direction.

Thank you

Re: 75 hp water pump issue

There is usually only a mist coming from that hole, not a steady stream. The later models incorporated a "pee hole" that has a steady stream, but your model does not have one as far as I know. Search the forums and you will find numerous threads that describe how the recirculating cooling system works. The factory service manual also gives a good description of how it works. You should definitely get a manual if you are considering working on the motor.

Thank you for the info. Does it sound like I have something to worry about with the steam? Could you tell me where to get the manual I will need?
Thanks again

Be sure to get a genuine Johnson/Evinrude manual, as the seloc ones tend to be very vague

You can get a genuine OMC Factory Service Manual at outboardbooks.com. Highly recommended over the aftermarket manuals. A parts manual also helps out a lot because it includes exploded views of all motor systems. These diagrams are not, for the most part, included in the service manuals.

If you still need assistance after you've browsed through the manuals, the people here are glad to help out.

By the way, you can access your parts manual online at:

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1961&hp=75

Just copy this address and paste it into your address field.
