Depending on which model outboard you have, the ignition system could be a "self contained" magneto or a 12 volt battery and distributor.<br /><br />IF the plug wires come out of the top of the belt driven unit hanging on back, then you need 12 volts to the distributor system, just like a car.<br /><br />If the wires come out of the bottom, then you have a magneto that does not need a battery. If there is no spark, first disconnect the wire on the side that goes to the engine harness, leave the wire that goes to the points. If it sparks OK now, then you have a short in the engine or boat wiring or key switch.
