It has a Clinton motor.

I can get the motor to run out of the water but can't get it started in the water. It is hard to start out of the water and must be choked to re-start even after it has warmed up. It will fire but won't stay running in the water. The diaphram looks to be in good shape and the float and rest of the carb looks good and clean. Any suggestions as how to get this motor to run in the water under a load?

It has no neutral so the prop is turning while starting.

thanks in advance.

I'm sorry,I don't have an answer to your question. I just bought a Sea King 1975 5hp today and trying to get it running myself. I have no manual and am wondering about gear oil for the bottom end. I don't see a drain or filler plug? What have you learned about yours so far? S/N 1050290 model K500 3108M

Im not sure if its the same or not. My sea king also started when it wanted too.
I found that the gas tank which is mounted on top was somehow deterating and had silvery slime in it causing tempary fuel line clogs.I removed the tank and put some small rocks and carb cleaner in it and shaked the you know what out of it. I did this several times.May not be the best way, but it worked and it may point you to the right direction.

Chrysler or West Bend made a 5hp Sea King for Montgomery Ward only one year,1964. Over the years Sea kings were made by several different companies. The most familiar are OMC, Chrysler/W.B., and I believe Eska. Eska used clinton and tecumseh power heads.

Thanks to all who replied.

martinc2- My motor didn't have a plug on the lower unit either. To add lower unit grease I just took the 4 screws loose off the bottom plate and replaced the old with the new. Some of the old ran out and I scooped out the rest. It was kind of milky so water had been in it.

I am looking for a new diaphram for it now. The old on has gotten a little crusty over the last 29 years.
