75HP Mariner Power trim works up but not down

I have been using my boat through the winter, and today I checked it out before going out in it tomorrow. It started and ran OK (out of the water, using the flushing muffs), but afterwards when I raised the engine with the power trim, I could not get it to come down again. It had worked earlier in the day, but suddenly failed. What do I need to look for? Is there a way to get the engine down manually? It is a 1998 Mariner 75Hp ELPT 2-stroke serial number (I think) 09991377 built in Europe.

Does the motor run when you try to take it down?If not try swapping the relays out& see if it goes down & not up

Thanks, Riverebel, I had wondered if it might be a relay problem, but I didn't know where the relays were located.

Like previously stated probably one bad relay.Should be able to find them under cowling just follow wires from motor up and it should explain itself(wires are green for down and blue for up)Also on the side of the mounting you should find a hole with a flat head screw in it,it is the manual bypass valve,if you loosen it a few turns(not remove it) the drive should go up or down with a little strain on your back. :)

A LITTLE strain??? My back hurts just thinking about tilting those up by hand. Down is easy enough. Ain't gravity a wonderful thing?

When you find the relays, you should hear them click when they are triggered. If you hear no click, it could be a bad switch, bad relay, or bad connection. Also, the electricity to the trim pump runs through both relays in both directions although only one or the other will click. You might assume that the one that clicks but still does nothing is automatically the bad one. It could be either.

Re: 75HP Mariner Power trim works up but not down

Thanks for all the information, guys. I succeeded in finding the manual override, and was able to enjoy a day's boating. Funny thing is, once or twice during the day the power trim DID power down as well as up, but mostly it was dead on the down cycle. Someone I spoke to said that one of the signs of a relay on the way out is intermittent working. He also suggested the power trim switch might be faulty.
