I've used this a few times on the water after purchasing it. On the last time out I couldn't get it to start. Previously it started on one pull, this time pulled so many times the damn pull rope broke. I choked it a few times and still nothing.

I have some time off and want to know what should i check, replace, clean to make sure it starts everytime?

Also what's the best thing to do to the motor when not using it for a few months. It will be a while before i get it out again and want to make sure it is kept well.

I have the manual, just a first time boater with little idea of what's going on. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 75'ISH 25HP outboard not starting

Welcome to the forums Hoss!

Usually when an engine all of a sudden stops running, it's due to lack of spark to the plugs.

The 75ish 25 is close to the time when the engines went from points and condensers to CD type ignitions. This needs to be known to offer any good advice on how to get the thing to run.

The year can be determined from the Model number. This will be on a small plate on the port (left) side transom bracket. If you would post it here, we can determine the year. If for some reason the plate is gone, look on top of the block for a welch plug. The model number will be here also.

If you go back to the main forums listings, take a gander at the FAQ listings. There is some good stuff there that would probably help you out.

When you posted that you have the manual, would that be a service manual or owners manual? The owners manual don't offer much in the way of troubleshooting. But a service manual would be a big help.

Post back with the model number and we'll see what we can do for the engine. Lots of good folks here that know their way around an outboard and no question is a stupid question.

Thanks for the quick reply. Its a 1978, and all i got is the owners manual.
So just to make sure rebuilt = take it all apart, clean it and put it back together?

Any additional info greatly appreciated

One simple thing to start with, put a nail or screw in one of the spark plug boots. Hold end of tip 5/16" from block with insulated plier and cranck. If a spark jumps, rule ignition out in first place. 2 spray a squirt of gas/oil mixture directly in carb throat, and pull cord. If it spits, sputters or tries to start ( sometimes they even DO start ) something blocked the fuel off, pump got defective, or something like that. Test a little and post back. It can also be a cheared flywheel key, but it will sputter, then.

make sure your gas hose in connected in the proper direction. the arrow on the primer bulb points toward the engine. the gas only flows one way.

Re: 75'ISH 25HP outboard not starting

Go to the Engine FAQs and do the "wont start" troubleshooting, Hoss. That will narrow it down to either fuel or spark.

Let us know what you find. Then we can be of more help quicker.

Re: 75'ISH 25HP outboard not starting

Thanks guys for all the info. I've read questions stating "Does the primer bulb firm up when pump?" Mine does when the motor is on, but won't always do it before starting the motor. Am I flooding the engine by trying to squeeze it too many times? What would cause the bulb not to firm up?

Thanks again

Re: 75'ISH 25HP outboard not starting

Alright its s 1979 25hp. I tested the plugs and gapped them and they are good. I took apart the carberator, and there was no clogging or gunk at the bottom of the bowl.

What is the black donut looking thing in the Carb for?

I fixed the pull rope and on a full choke, and 3 pulls that damn thing fired up, i didn't have it in water so i instantly shut it down. I didn't even have to put fuel mix into carb. I will stick it in a trashcan of H20 and see if it can idle.

If it doesn't start tomorrow or won't hold at idle what else should i check/do to it?

What is the best Epoxy, and where can it be bought, to patch up cracks in an aluminum boat?

Thanks again

Hi Hoss, That donut thing you refer to is the float, also glad to hear you got it to start. Since this motor would seem to be somewhat new to you I would suggest reading this post as it relates to motors that may require some immediate maintenance attention.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000033

Also I would suggest strongly that you do both your motor and yourself a favor and locate an OEM service/shop manual. They can be found at Ken Cook.com or Marineengine.com, Also they are frequently available on Ebay.

Good Luck ;)

Try it again, I just clicked on it and it opens up JB'S post on Awakening a sleeping outboard in the FAQ section

MCM I just tried it to and it said no such topic number exists.I guess he could just go to the FAQ section.
