I have a 75 model 85hp Johnson V4 motor. it will crank for about 5 secs. and then it shuts off. when it cranks, i can rev the engine up with my warmup lever, but no matter what my rpms are it still goes dead. I replaced the fuel pump with a new one, cleaned my carborators and jets, bought new gas tank, and flushed all my fuel lines for trash. i still had the same result with the motor. I also made sure the electric choke was not sticking. i was wondering if some type of electrical system was killing my engine for some reason. don't think it would shut off due to overheating because it was only running 5 sec. any expert suggestions on what i might be missing would be highly appreciated.

w@rboat:

I have read on here where people have had similar problems, and a lot of the experts here thought that it could be electrical problems. Have you checked (or can you check) your stator and coils? If you can check voltage at the coils, it might be a start.

Also, is the primer bulb staying hard for the brief time the motor is running? (That's the only fuel system element you didn't mention.)

Let us know if you check the electrical. Hopefully some of these guys here can help you out.

Good luck!
