I am working on 76 140hp mercruiser and I replaced impeller on lower unit. I read that it is easier to take the upper unit off at same time so I did. My question is can I Use something like an aviation gasket maker when I put the stern drive back on? the old gasket is toast and local marine shop will have to order the gasket. I am trying to get it done today. Thanks.

Not even something like RTV silicone or something like it? Thought as long as I cleaned it good and let the silicone skin over it would work.

Nope,... Pretty much a guaranteed failure,....

The good news is, Any of the Alpha series gasket set will work,....
MC-1 which is yer drive,...
Or the Alpha 1 gasket set, or the Alpha 1, Gen.II gasket set will work,....

Matter of fact, the Alpha Gen.II gasket is is all I buy, at 'bout $6. bucks a set,.....

Don't even try it without the right gasket. I bought a gen-you-eyn Mercruiser gasket set and after installing it, had water getting in the u-joint bellows. After wracking my brain and disassembling a half dozen times, finally realized the package had two of the gaskets stuck tightly to each other. The extra thickness was enough to prevent the water passage o-ring from getting enough pressure to seal and water was leaking in from there.

You will not get a good seal using gasket sealer. And it may have unforeseen consequences.

Is there a way I can bypass the stern drive all together and just hook a hose up to the line that goes to the motor? I have a mechanic friend coming over Monday who said he would get the motor idle and such all tuned up for me but the motor has to be running or should I not do that for some reason?

Ayuh,..... Inside the boat is the water line from the transom, to the t-stat housin',...
Pull that hose off the t-stat housin', 'n attach yer garden hose there,...
