'76 25hp Evinrude backfiring

I have a '76 25hp Evinrude, model 25602E which does not idle, and back fires. I have rebuilt this motor. The inlet gaskets have been made by myself using standard gasket material (could this be the cause?). Checked timing and this seems to be correct. Cylinder compression is very good.

Hi Dutchy,<br />Does it actually backfire with a bang, or kinda sneeze and cough? the two are different. Backfiring is usually associated with ignition, and the other is usually associated with a lean running condition, carburation.<br />Let us know
