The saga continues! I have replaced the inlet manifold gaskets and cleaned the reed valve assembly. After reassembly the motor will now not show any sign of life - not even backfiring! I have checked the ignition timing - points open after TDC and condencers test ok.
I have a few questions: 1)What is the purpose of the reticulating valve on the inlet manifold, 2)what is the metric equivalent of 0.022 inches, 3)are the ignition coils prone to failure and if not, what should the resistance reading be between the primary and the sparkplug lead (I am measuring 12000 ohms). 4)Have I overlooked something simple?
Thanks for your help.
p.s. I might add that I got this motor in three boxes and I have rebuilt it over time, so I might now be sitting with the original problem which the previous owner must have had.

Hello Dutchy
These are just some ideas. Did you install the point cam on the crankshaft right side up? Is the fly wheel key or keyway messed up at all? When you set the points the ignit needs to be full advanced. My guess is that .022 of an inch would equal .55mm. If you installed new points, go ahead and try setting them at .020 or .5mm. Yes coils can go bad, they need to be tested with an ignit annalizer. If your back firing you got spark. Are the spark wires crossed? Hope this helps good luck.

Hi dutchy
One last thing, I bet the last time it back fired on you, it sheared the fly wheel key.
