Hello I have a 76’ 15 hp Evinrude, I’m looking at LeeRoy’s ramblings on how to do the link and sync? Question? Do I have to remove the flywheel?

No you do not. Is the link and sync actually off? To link and sync that motor you have to move the cam attached the stator plate. That is the cam the carb roller rides on. Underneath that cam are 2 small bolts that have to be loosend up. That will allow you to move the cam to do the link and sync. Be careful those bolts are are easily stripped out and require removal of the stator to fix. I don't remember what size bolts those are but I do remember having to grind a wrench to fit.in there.

What is your motor doing / not doing that leads you to do this procedure ?

I was just asking the question if I needed to unbolt the timing plate. Actually the gears were off a little bit. I took the handle off and shimmed up the gears. I’m getting full throttle now. Thx.

Racerone the throttle was stiff and the gears were not meshing together very well.

I took the handle off from the motor. Look at the parts diagram. I removed #56 the steering grip. Then I slid out #66 the gear shaft assembly. Then I removed #65 the gear and bushing assy. I found a washer that would fit over #66, but would also fit up inside the handle. Put #65 back on #66 then put it all back together. Now it will make putting #56 steering grip on a little harder, but it can be done. Still can’t raise the handle too high, but the gears mesh together nicely.. I did this on my 84 9.9 too.

The two little nuts on the throttle cam are 5/16" and as mentioned, you would need a very thin wrench to turn them. I have tried with a pair of needle nose pliers but after 45 years of people using this quick method the nuts on these motors are usually too stripped for those.

A proper link and sink will have the arrow on the throttle cam in the middle of the carb's roller JUST as the cam touches the roller. If it is very close to that I would not fiddle with it.

Thx. Yeah I got it started today and everything seems good. So I’m taking your advice and leaving it be.
